Career Invitational for RNs

SITUATION

As a result of a recent merger and the addition of several new clients, Health Management Corporation (HMC) had an urgent need to hire at least six RNs. These positions would act as nurse consultants, managing maternity, asthma, diabetes, coronary disease, and congestive heart failure cases. A unique solution was required that would attract a large numbers of nurses. Our client also wanted to ensure that all positions would have the same commencement date in order to allow for a single training/orientation.

STRATEGY/SOLUTION

We realized that a career invitational was required to meet HMC's goals, and proposed three marketing events with varying budgets. To promote the affair, we then developed print ads that appeared in the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Charlottesville markets, as well as in the TV Guide/Weather Crawl. Radio spots were also produced, with several spots appearing on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday (prior to the event). We also created an oversized postcard that was mailed to a list of RNs residing in Virginia, which directed all interested parties to call an 800 number. This number connected them to an Integrated Voice Response System (IVR) that would pre-screen candidates who were required to answer a series of questions. Only those who answered a defined number correctly were then allowed to schedule their interview during the event.

For the all day invitational, we decorated the room with pastel-colored balloons, and a balloon wall separated the registration/activity area from the interview area. An artist was hired in the morning to draw caricatures of the attendees; and during the evening, a massage therapist offered chair massages. Giveaways were donated by local business and radio stations, and included brunch, dinners, a white water rafting trip, a weekend trip for two, spa certificates, and other goodies. Prizes were given during hourly drawings, while hiring managers conducted interviews (from 10 a.m. to 7p.m.).

THE RESULT

The event was a colorful success! 49 pre-screened RNs were interviewed and 9 hires were made. Health Management Corporation walked away with 50% more hires than their minimum requirement, and at a cost-per-hire under $2,600. This proved to be the perfect solution for their hiring needs.
