Men in Nursing Survey

First of its kind survey of male nurses

"A "must read" for anyone interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of men in nursing, their objectives in becoming nurses and their lived experience of being nurses."

Jim Raper, DSN, CFNP, JD
President, American Assembly for Men in Nursing

This breakthrough survey of men in nursing was conducted online from October 17th to December 15th, 2004. During that time, 498 male nurses took the 34-question survey. The survey was designed to examine the reasons behind the small percentage of men in nursing. The questions covered a range of issues, including:

  • the special challenges for men pursuing a nursing career
  • the effectiveness of two current ad campaigns depicting men in nursing
  • the reasons men aren't attracted to the nursing profession
  • the best nurse recruitment methods for men
  • misperceptions about men in nursing

The respondents were especially candid about their emotional ties to their work and whether they would become nurses again. Most felt that becoming a nurse was the best decision they ever made, but there were also some who would choose a different profession, were they given the chance to do it all again. Especially disheartening were the statements made by some respondents that they would not encourage a friend to enter the nursing profession.

The survey also revealed some interesting feedback on the term nursing and nurses. Many felt these terms were sexist and came with pre-conceived notions, and commented that the name of the profession would have to change before true equality could be gained. Participants were also concerned about the term male nurse and thought that using that phrase actually added to the problem.

We hope our in-depth analysis of the survey results will provide health care recruiters with greater insight into the mind, experiences and perceptions of the male nurse. We also hope recruiters will take the opinions revealed in this survey to heart and draw on them to formulate innovative nurse recruitment methods encouraging both men and woman to take up the noble profession of nursing.

The Men in Nursing Survey was developed in conjunction with the California Institute for Nursing and Healthcare and the Coalition for Nursing Careers in California. We also consulted with the American Assembly for Men in Nursing and men who are staff nurses, clinical managers and educators.

Survey examines why men enter nursing
A recent survey of men in nursing by Bernard Hodes Group examined the reasons men enter the field and their views on effective recruitment approaches for men. Most respondents said the ability to help people and make a meaningful contribution to society were the career's most valuable rewards, and that they would still enter the profession if they had it to do over again.
