LABOR FORCE BRIEFS
KIMBERLY-CLARK
Kimberly-Clark Corp. plans to eliminate about 150 jobs in Neenah in the next nine months, including about 50 positions next month in research and engineering. The cuts are part of a move to “further consolidate and integrate various business teams in its North Atlantic Personal Care and Family Care organizations," the maker of Kleenex and Scott tissues said in a news release. The company said nearly a year ago that it aims to reduce payroll by 10%, or 6,000 jobs, by 2008. About 100 workers already are gone from Kimberly-Clark's Lakeview mill and distribution center in the Town of Menasha, where about 400 remaining employees make Huggies disposable diapers and Pull-Ups training pants. The company plans to close Lakeview by the end of 2007. © 2006 The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 6.30.06
3COM CORP.
3Com Corp. of Marlborough (computer-networking equipment) said its quarterly loss narrowed to $15.2 million as sales in China rose, but it's closing 21 offices and cutting 250 jobs. Chief executive R. Scott Murray, who took over in January, aims to turn around a company that hasn't profited since 2000. © 2006 Globe Newspaper Company, 6.30.06
BERKLINE/BENCHCRAFT LLC
Berkline/BenchCraft LLC will lay off all 400 workers at its furniture plant in Baldwyn as it prepares to shut down the 10-year-old facility on Aug. 26. The decision was prompted by increased reliance on offshore resources, on-going efforts to boost internal efficiencies and the effects of recent bankruptcies of several large retail customers. © 2006 Associated Press, 6.29.06
ENGINEERED PLASTIC PRODUCTS INC.
Auto parts maker Engineered Plastic Products Inc., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March, said it will close two plants in Michigan and one in Ohio, eliminating 450 jobs. The factories are in Shiawassee County's Owosso Township, Ypsilanti, and Lima, Ohio. They produced injection-molded interior automotive parts for General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG. © 2006 Associated Press, 6.29.06
HI/FN INC.
Shares of HI/FN Inc., a Los Gatos, Calif.-based maker of compression and search technology used by networking and storage suppliers, shot up after the company disclosed plans to cut 45 jobs, or 22 percent of its workforce. The cost-cutting plan is expected to save the company $6 million to $7 million annually. HI/FN said it plans to close its Carlsbad, Calif., facility and record a re-structuring charge of about $500,000 in its third quarter ending June 30, as well as a $600,000 charge in the fourth quarter when the Carlsbad facility is closed. © 2006 Associated Press, 6.29.06
LEWIS-GALE MEDICAL CENTER
Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem is eliminating 41 jobs in the first announced job cuts at the hospital in 10 years. The layoff affected administrative and support functions, but not nursing. The hospital employs 1,500 workers, about the same number as it had at this time last year. © 2006 The Roanoke Times, 6.29.06
MICROSOFT CORP.
Microsoft Corp. said it is cutting 148 total U.S. sales jobs, as part of efforts to be more efficient. The software giant is eliminating 214 sales jobs but adding another 66 in the reorganization. Those employees whose jobs are being eliminated will have the option to apply for the new positions. The Redmond-based company said the job cuts and new positions are aimed at helping the company be more responsive to customers. © 2006 Associated Press, 6.29.06
PENDLETON WOOLEN MILLS
Pendleton Woolen Mills will close its Bellevue women's wear factory -- its last U.S. clothing plant, throwing about 50 people out of work. It will be the fourth Pendleton plant in the area to close in 10 years, ending a history of Pendleton making clothing in Nebraska that dates to 1946. The Portland, Ore., company blamed the Bellevue closing on "the continuing need to reduce costs in light of the increasing flood of lower-cost imports, particularly from China." © 2006 The Omaha World-Herald Company, 6.29.06
